Everything You Need To Know About Astragal Bars

Heritage homes often have several aesthetically pleasing period features, the most distinguishable being authentic windows and doors. Original windows from the Georgian and Victorian eras often included glazing bars as part of the frame structure. Many modern homeowners continue to find the ‘multi-pane’ window design appealing. Here at the Rose Collection, we install uPVC sash windows featuring astragal bars.

In this article, our sash window experts share everything you need to know about astragal bars.

What Are Astragal Bars?

During the Georgian and Victorian eras, glazing manufacturing was limited, and windows were made up of several small glass panes. Traditional windows consisted of several panes of single glazing joined together by timber bars.

Manufacturing has advanced significantly over the centuries, and windows today often consist of much larger glazing panes sealed into a single framed unit. Traditionally, glazing bars were used to hold multiple glass panes in place. For example, Georgian sash windows often featured a ‘6 over 6’ design, with a timber bar fitted between each piece of glass.

Modern sash windows with astragal bars have a different structure from authentic timber frames. To blend the appearance of classic architecture with 21st century performance, astragal bars are used to make one large piece of glass look like several smaller panes. The windows in the Rose Collection are made using energy efficient double glazing and uPVC frames. Alongside astragal bars with an authentic appearance, we offer several other classic decorative accessories.

The market leading Rose Collection is made up of three high quality profiles – Heritage Rose, Ultimate Rose, and Charisma Rose. The modern sash windows we work with feature authentic timber-line astragal bars. These glazing bars are secured to aluminium carrier bars, providing the entire window frame with enhanced strength and durability.

Whether you are looking to replicate the Georgian ‘6 over 6’ sash layout or the Edwardian design of ‘6 over 2’, all heritage styles can be achieved using astragal bars. Secured internally and externally, astragal bars transform large double glazing into the timeless ‘multi-pane’ sash window design. The strong and durable bars also improve the structural strength of the window frame and provide enhanced protection for your home.

Today, sash windows with astragal bars continue to be a popular choice for modern homeowners. These profiles offer traditional charm alongside the many benefits of modern uPVC. In the past, glazing bars were an essential part of the timber frame structure, but astragal bars today are purely used for aesthetic purposes.

Different Types of Glazing Bars

Astragal bars are not the only method used to replicate the traditional sash window design. Georgian bars are also frequently used and continue to be a popular choice amongst homeowners wanting to add a touch of classic charm to their property. Georgian bars and astragal bars are similar, but there are some key differences.

Astragal bars are fitted on the inside and outside of double glazing. Centuries ago, traditional glazing bars were manufactured using timber, along with the rest of the sash frame. The windows in the Rose Collection feature timber lined astragal bars for maximum authenticity, but the main window frame is manufactured using uPVC.

Unlike astragal bars, Georgian bars are only installed internally. With Georgian bars secured inside the sealed glazing unit, the outside surface area of the window remains untouched. However, the classic appearance of several glass panes can still be achieved with the Georgian bars ‘breaking up’ the glass from their position inside the glazing.

Both astragal and Georgian bars transform contemporary sash windows into close replicas of authentic timber frames.
