Understanding Sash Window Parts

Sliding sash windows are easy to use once you know how they work. The modern frames in the Rose Collection can improve the appearance and energy efficiency of heritage homes and new builds alike. Due to their sliding function, sash windows have several different parts, each serving a unique purpose. If you would like to understand sash window parts better, we have put together this expert guide.

Meeting Rail

The meeting rail is the horizontal bar at the bottom of the upper sash and the top of the lower sash. When the sash windows are closed, the meeting rails will touch. With the Rose Collection, we offer the slimmest meeting rails available on the market today. The Ultimate Rose has rails of just 35mm in width which truly replicates a traditional sash window appearance.

Run Through Sash Horn

Run through sash horns were traditionally used to strengthen the structure of the sash windows. With advances in window technology and modern materials, homeowners can choose whether or not sash horns are installed on their sash windows. For the most authentic sash window design, we recommend choosing sash horns. Homeowners love the options available in our Ultimate Rose range. From our seamless run through sash horn to our unique Seahorse sash horn, you can benefit from a variety of sash horn options that provide a traditional appearance.

Deep Cill

Window cills can be found on most profiles, not just sliding sash frames. However, traditional sash windows featured a deep cill, installed to prevent water build up on the timber frames. Modern uPVC sash windows, such as the Ultimate Rose, also feature a deep cill option to mimic this classical design successfully. This essential part of the sash window structure is located at the bottom of the frame.

Putty

When sliding sash windows were first manufactured, the timber frames had the glazing fixed in place with a sloping, 45 degrees putty line. The putty was used to seal the gap between the glazing and the frame – providing a layer of effective weatherproofing. The windows in the Rose Collection replicate the authentic putty detail but include other weatherproofing features, such as gaskets and draught excluder pads.

Seahorse Sash Horn

For a more sophisticated aesthetic, traditional joiners would decorate timber sash frames with handcrafted seahorse style sash horns. Unlike the run through sash horns that were needed to add strength to joints, the seahorse horns were for decorative purposes only. This stunning option is exclusively available with our Ultimate Rose model.

Astragal Bars

Installed on sash windows to give them the appearance of individual window panes, astragal bars are associated with Georgian and the early Victorian period. The modern sash windows in the Rose Collection secure authentic timber-line astragal bars to aluminium carrier bars. This design adds strength and durability to the frame’s structure while also improving privacy and security.

Staff Bead

Traditional sash windows used a staff bead to hold the sash in place when open. Modern designs use pre-tensioned spiral balancers instead, but our market leading designs can be upgraded to include a removable sash bead. This accessory creates a more authentic finish and ensures that modern sash windows look as much like the original designs as possible.
