Energy Efficient Modern Windows

With heating prices rising high in the UK, now is the perfect time to invest in energy saving windows. Outdated single glazing and damaged frames can impact the thermal performance of your home, leading to cold draughts and expensive energy bills.

By switching underperforming windows for energy efficient double glazing, homes of all ages can benefit from enhanced heat regulation and improved weather protection. At the Rose Collection, we bring homeowners market-leading uPVC windows that have been manufactured to imitate the classic sash design but benefit from outstanding modern performance that significantly improves the energy efficiency of your home.

In this article, our glazing experts share everything you need to know about energy efficient modern windows.

What Are Energy Efficient Windows?

Windows create a barrier between the inside of a home and the world outside, and they need to offer effective insulation all year round. If you have ever spent time in an older property and felt colder than usual, single glazing or outdated windows are likely to be the cause.

Energy efficient windows feature double or triple glazing inside a sealed unit. This design works to trap pockets of warm air and prevent cold draughts from making their way inside. An energy efficient window will offer effective heat regulation all year round, ensuring your home stays warm in the winter and doesn’t overheat during the warmer months.

Modern energy efficient windows, like the ones in the Rose Collection, are made from uPVC, and the frames are designed to offer reliable insulation and weather protection. Windows with timber frames can become damaged due to weather exposure, and their energy efficiency can be impacted – this is rarely an issue with uPVC or aluminium frames.

Energy Ratings and U-Values

Finding an energy efficient window is an easy task thanks to the energy rating scale system. Modern windows are assessed to discover the level of energy efficiency they can provide. The glazing and frames will be tested to see how well they work to prevent heat loss, stop draughts and maximise solar gain.

The energy rating scale goes from A++ to E, the former being the most energy efficient and the latter being the least. The British Fenestration Rating Council runs this rating system, and is a quick and easy way for homeowners to gauge the energy efficiency they can expect from their double glazing installation.

All windows with an energy rating will also have a U-value, often included on the energy rating label. U-values are measured to demonstrate how easily heat passes through the window materials and how quickly the heat is lost.

U-values are measured in W/m2k (Watts per square metre Kelvin), and the lower the number, the more energy efficient the window. Energy efficient modern windows must receive a U-value of 1.6W/m2k or lower. The approximate U-value of traditional single glazing is 5.6, significantly higher than the 1.49W/m2k achieved by the uPVC windows in the Rose Collection.

Benefits of Energy Efficient Double Glazed Windows

Energy efficient windows have many benefits and are a worthwhile investment for your home. If you are still undecided, here are the top advantages of an energy efficient double glazing installation:

  • Reduced heating bills
  • Better for the planet – lower carbon footprint
  • Minimises heat loss
  • Can improve sound insulation
  • Less prone to condensation build up
  • Keeps homes warmer for longer
