How to replace rope in sash windows

uPVC Sash Window Security Video

Traditional timber sash windows operate on a weights, cords, and pulleys system. The cords allow the windows to be slid open and the weight is balanced to keep them in place. As a moving part which is regularly in use and must withstand high levels of daily friction, the cords often snap. When this happens the window will become difficult to open and close.

Replacing rope or cord in a traditional sash window can be done but is a labour intensive and tricky job. It could be attempted by an experienced DIYer but it’s probably best to call in a professional.

Removing the broken cord

To replace sash window cords you will firstly need to remove the sash window. Using a chisel and mallet, carefully prise off the beading trying not to damage the corners. Next, cut any parts of unbroken cord to allow the window sash to be removed. Carefully remove the window and set it aside.

Once the window has been removed, you’ll have access to the pocket cover located in the side of the frame. Prise off the pocket cover using a chisel, lift out the weights and remove the old cord.

Replacing sash window cords

Retrieve the window sash and attach the new cord to the channel using nails. Rest the sash on the window’s frame and guide the new cord over the pulleys and into the window frame’s channel. Attach the new cord to the weights with a strong knot. Try opening and closing the window. If the sash weight hits the top of the channel when the window is fully closed then the cord has been cut correctly.

Replace the pocket cover then reinstall the sash. Finally, nail the beading back in place and the job’s done.

The benefits of a spring balance system

The Rose Collection uPVC sash windows open and close using a torsion balance system. This is a popular alternative to the traditional weights and cords system. The spring system is concealed within the window frame and is easily accessible for maintenance or replacement.

A spring balance system has a much longer lifespan than a traditional cords system and provides a smooth opening and closing action every time. It is much more cost effective without compromising on performance.
